Imagine two of the most powerful kids in school are in a feud. Every other student is being pressured to back one side or the other — and anyone who refuses gets ignored, threatened, or called disloyal. Now imagine that feud was between two global superpowers, each armed with nuclear weapons capable of destroying civilisations. That was the world between roughly 1947 and 1991. Before you read on, think about this: what might it feel like to be a newly independent country watching two giants demand your loyalty?
