The Wind of Change: Decolonisation of Africa

Imagine you have lived your entire life under rules made by people in a distant country who never asked for your opinion. They control your land, your trade, and your government. Then one day, millions of people across a vast continent begin to demand the right to rule themselves. How do you think the distant rulers would react — and how might your own people fight back? By 1945, European powers controlled almost the entire continent of Africa. Within just thirty years, that picture had completely changed. Over fifty new nations had won independence. This is one of the most dramatic political transformations in modern history.

**What is decolonisation?** Decolonisation is the process by which a colonised territory gains independence from the foreign power that controls it. In Africa, this meant European empires — chiefly Britain, France, Belgium, and Portugal — withdrawing their rule so that African peoples could form their own governments. **The colonial background** From the 1880s onwards, European powers carved up Africa at the Berlin Conference of 1884–85, dividing the continent largely without input from Africans. By 1914, only Ethiopia and Liberia remained fully independent. Europeans justified colonialism through ideas of racial and cultural superiority, but in practice it meant economic exploitation: extracting raw materials, controlling trade, and using forced or cheap African labour. **Why did decolonisation accelerate after 1945?** Several causes combined to make independence movements unstoppable after the Second World War (1939–45). 1. **The war weakened European powers.** Britain and France emerged from the war exhausted and deeply in debt. Maintaining overseas empires became expensive and politically difficult. 2. **African soldiers had fought for European freedom.** Around one million African soldiers served in the Second World War. Many returned home asking: if we fought for freedom in Europe, why don't we have it at home? 3. **New international pressure.** The newly formed United Nations (1945) promoted the right of peoples to self-determination — the principle that people should choose their own government. The United States and Soviet Union both, for different reasons, opposed European colonialism. 4. **Educated African leaders built independence movements.** Figures such as Kwame Nkrumah in Ghana, Jomo Kenyatta in Kenya, and Patrice Lumumba in the Democratic Republic of Congo (then Belgian Congo) organised political parties, strikes, and campaigns that European powers found increasingly difficult to suppress. **The pace and character of independence varied greatly.** Some transitions were peaceful. Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African country to gain independence in 1957, following years of organised nonviolent protest led by Kwame Nkrumah. Britain negotiated a transfer of power. Others involved prolonged violence. In Algeria, France fought a brutal eight-year war (1954–62) against the National Liberation Front (FLN) before finally granting independence in 1962. In Kenya, the Mau Mau uprising (1952–60) was violently suppressed by Britain, yet it helped accelerate Kenyan independence in 1963. Portugal held on longest. Angola and Mozambique only gained independence in 1975, after armed liberation movements fought for over a decade and a revolution in Portugal itself changed the home government's policy. **The 'Wind of Change'** In 1960 alone, seventeen African countries gained independence. British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan had already acknowledged this unstoppable momentum in his famous 'Wind of Change' speech in February 1960, admitting that African nationalism was a powerful political force that could not be ignored. **Legacies and ongoing challenges** Decolonisation brought enormous pride and new political freedoms. However, the borders drawn by European powers during colonialism often divided ethnic groups or forced rivals together, creating tensions that led to conflict in several newly independent states. Economic structures built to serve European interests were not easily transformed overnight.
