The was the systematic, state-organised and murder of six million Jewish people by the Nazi regime in Germany and in territories it occupied between 1933 and 1945. The word 'Holocaust' comes from a Greek word meaning 'destruction by fire'. The Nazis, led by Adolf Hitler, also targeted Roma people, disabled people, LGBTQ+ individuals, political opponents, Jehovah's Witnesses, and others — killing millions more across these groups. The persecution built gradually. From 1933, the Nazis passed laws — called the (1935) — that stripped Jewish people of citizenship and banned them from many professions. Jewish children were expelled from schools. Jewish-owned businesses were boycotted and destroyed. Jewish people were forced to wear a yellow Star of David badge so they could be identified. These early steps show how discrimination can escalate when a government uses the law as a weapon against its own people. From 1941, the Nazis implemented the 'Final Solution' — a plan to murder all Jewish people in Europe. Jewish people, along with other targeted groups, were transported in crowded, locked freight trains to concentration camps and death camps such as Auschwitz-Birkenau in occupied Poland. Around 1.1 million people were killed at Auschwitz alone. By the time Allied forces liberated the camps in 1944–1945, the scale of the atrocity shocked the world. Every stage of the Holocaust involved the systematic violation of human rights. People were denied the right to life, freedom, equality, education, property, and dignity. They were dehumanised — treated as less than human — before being murdered. The world's response was a determination that this must never happen again. In 1945, the Nuremberg Trials put Nazi leaders on trial for '' — a new legal concept created specifically because existing laws had no words for what the Nazis had done.
