Imagine an entire enslaved population overthrowing the most powerful colonial empire of its day — without any outside army coming to rescue them. Does that sound possible? In 1791, on a Caribbean island called Saint-Domingue, it happened. Before we dive in, think about what you already know: What makes people rise up against an unjust system? What gives a revolution its power? Keep those questions in your mind as you work through this lesson.
