What Is Prehistory — and How Do We Study It?

refers to the period of human existence before written records were kept. It covers an enormous span of time — from the appearance of the earliest human ancestors (hominins) roughly 2.5 million years ago, right up to the adoption of writing in different parts of the world at different times. Because there are no written documents, historians must rely on a different discipline: .
Archaeology is the systematic study of the human past through the recovery and analysis of physical remains. Archaeologists excavate, or carefully dig, sites where people once lived. They record, date, and interpret everything they find. The physical remains left behind are called the archaeological record.
Archaeologists use several key types of evidence:
1. S — These are portable objects made or used by people, such as flint tools, pottery, jewellery, or weapons. Artefacts reveal technology, trade, and daily life. For example, stone hand-axes found across Africa, Europe, and Asia (dating from about 1.7 million to 300,000 years ago) show that early hominins shared similar tool-making techniques across vast distances.
2. S — These are natural remains that humans left behind without shaping them, such as animal bones, seeds, pollen, and charcoal. Ecofacts tell us what people ate, what environments they lived in, and how they used fire. Pollen preserved in ancient bogs can reveal what plants grew nearby thousands of years ago.
3. FEATURES — These are non-portable remains fixed in the landscape: post holes (the underground marks left by wooden posts), hearths, burial mounds, ditches, and monuments. Stonehenge in England, constructed in phases between roughly 3000 and 1500 BCE, is a famous prehistoric feature. Archaeologists still debate its purpose — ceremony, astronomy, or ancestral burial — because no written explanation exists.
4. HUMAN REMAINS — Skeletal remains and preserved bodies (such as the 'bog bodies' of northern Europe, some dating to around 400 BCE–400 CE) reveal diet, disease, physical appearance, age at death, and sometimes manner of death.
DATING THE PAST
To make sense of evidence, archaeologists need to know when things happened. Two key methods help:
— : the principle that in undisturbed soil, deeper layers are older. Archaeologists use the position of an object in a layer (called a stratum) to estimate its relative age.
— : living things absorb carbon-14, a mildly radioactive form of carbon. When an organism dies, the carbon-14 slowly decays at a known rate. By measuring how much remains in organic material (bone, charcoal, wood), scientists can calculate when the organism died. This method works reliably for material up to about 50,000 years old.
LIMITATIONS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL EVIDENCE
The is always incomplete. Most organic materials — wood, leather, cloth, food — decay and disappear. Only hard materials like stone, fired clay, and bone survive reliably. This means we likely know more about prehistoric technology than about beliefs, language, music, or social relationships. Interpretations can also reflect the biases of the archaeologists themselves. Early archaeologists often assumed prehistoric societies were led by men, but later analysis of burial goods and skeletal data challenged these assumptions. Archaeology gives us clues — but those clues must always be interpreted with care.
Worked example
WORKED EXAMPLE — Interpreting a Prehistoric Site:
In 1991, a preserved human body was found melting out of a glacier on the border between Italy and Austria. He became known as Ötzi the Iceman. Using multiple types of archaeological evidence, researchers built up a detailed picture of his life:
• His ARTEFACTS included a copper axe, a bow and arrows, and a flint knife — telling us about his technology and that copper-working existed in Europe around 3300 BCE.
• ECOFACTS found in his gut (his last meals, preserved by the ice) showed he had eaten red deer, wild goat, einkorn wheat, and various plants — revealing diet and agriculture in his region.
• His HUMAN REMAINS showed he was about 45 years old, suffered from arthritis, and had an arrowhead lodged in his shoulder — indicating he was killed by violence.
Notice how no single piece of evidence tells the whole story. Archaeologists combine all the evidence — and still debate some conclusions. For instance, why was he in the mountains? Was he fleeing, hunting, or trading? The evidence gives clues, but cannot give certainty. This is a key feature of prehistoric history: it is always interpretive.
