The Cold War (1947–1991) was a prolonged period of political tension and rivalry between two superpowers: the United States of America (USA) and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR, also called the Soviet Union). It is called 'cold' because the two superpowers never directly fought each other in open battle — yet their rivalry shaped nearly every major global conflict of the second half of the twentieth century. **Why Did It Start?** The roots of the Cold War lie in ideology — a system of beliefs about how society and government should be organised. The USA championed capitalism and liberal democracy: citizens could own private property, businesses competed freely, and leaders were elected by popular vote. The USSR championed communism: the state owned all industry and resources, and a single party (the Communist Party) controlled the government. These two visions for organising society were deeply incompatible. After World War Two ended in 1945, the USSR installed communist governments across Eastern Europe — countries such as Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslovakia. Winston Churchill famously described this as an 'Iron Curtain' descending across Europe, dividing free nations in the West from Soviet-controlled nations in the East. The USA responded in 1947 with the Truman Doctrine, pledging to support any nation threatened by communist takeover. From that point, both sides spent enormous sums building nuclear weapons and seeking allies worldwide. **Key Events** • **The Berlin Blockade (1948–49):** The USSR blockaded West Berlin, cutting off food and supplies to the Western-controlled part of the city deep inside Soviet-controlled East Germany. The USA and its allies airlifted supplies for nearly a year until the USSR backed down. This showed how dangerous the tension could become. • **The Korean War (1950–53):** Communist North Korea (backed by the USSR and China) invaded democratic South Korea (backed by the USA and UN allies). The war ended in a stalemate, but over 3 million people died — a stark reminder of the human cost of Cold War proxy conflicts. • **The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962):** The most dangerous moment of the Cold War. The USSR secretly installed nuclear missiles on Cuba, just 90 miles from the US coast. For 13 days in October 1962, the world held its breath as US President Kennedy and Soviet leader Khrushchev negotiated. War was avoided when the USSR agreed to remove the missiles in exchange for a US promise not to invade Cuba. • **The Space Race (1957–69):** Rivalry moved beyond Earth. The USSR launched the first satellite, Sputnik, in 1957, and sent the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into space in 1961. The USA responded by landing astronauts on the Moon in 1969. Science and technology became another battlefield. • **The Fall of the Berlin Wall (1989) and Collapse of the USSR (1991):** By the late 1980s, the Soviet economy was struggling. Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev introduced reforms, but they triggered a wave of democratic revolutions across Eastern Europe.
