After World War Two ended in 1945, the world had two 's' — very powerful countries that disagreed about how the world should be run. They were the USA (United States of America) and the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, which was centred on Russia). They did not fight each other directly. Instead, they competed in many ways, including a race to conquer space. This period of tension was called the . The Space Race officially began in 1957, when the USSR launched a small metal ball called Sputnik 1 into orbit around Earth. It was the first ever human-made . Many people in the USA were shocked — if the USSR could put something into space, could they also use that technology as a weapon? In 1961, the USSR struck again. Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space. He ed Earth once in 108 minutes. It was a huge moment for all of humanity, and it put enormous pressure on the USA to catch up. The USA responded boldly. President John F. Kennedy promised in 1961 that the USA would land a person on the Moon before the end of the decade. This was an astonishing goal. Thousands of scientists and engineers worked together to make it happen. On 20 July 1969, NASA's Apollo 11 mission succeeded. Astronaut Neil Armstrong became the first human to walk on the Moon. His crewmate Buzz Aldrin joined him shortly after. Neil Armstrong's words — 'That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind' — were heard by millions of people on television and radio around the world. The Moon landing is widely seen as the high point of the Space Race. The USA had achieved what seemed impossible. The Space Race showed the world what humans could do when they aimed for the greatest possible challenge.
