The Silk Road: The World's Greatest Trade Route

Imagine you receive a package from somewhere thousands of kilometres away. Inside is a soft, shimmering cloth you have never seen before. How did it get to you? Who brought it? Around 2,000 years ago, people in Europe asked exactly this question when they first saw silk from China. They had no idea how it was made. Some even thought it grew on trees! Today you will discover how silk — and much more — travelled halfway around the world.

The Silk Road was not one single road. It was a huge network of land and sea routes that connected China in the east to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. Merchants used it from around 130 BCE all the way to the 1450s CE — that is more than 1,500 years! The routes stretched roughly 6,400 kilometres across mountains, deserts, and plains. The route got its modern name from the precious silk cloth that traders carried west from China. But silk was just one of many goods that moved along these routes. From China came silk, tea, and porcelain (a fine type of pottery). From Central Asia came horses, gems, and spices. From the west came gold, glass, and wool. Ideas also travelled — religions such as Buddhism and Islam spread along these routes, and so did technologies like papermaking. Who used the Silk Road? Merchants rarely travelled the whole route themselves. Instead, goods passed through many hands. A Chinese merchant might sell silk to a Central Asian trader. That trader would sell it to a Persian merchant, who would carry it further west. This chain of trade meant that by the time silk reached Rome, it cost an enormous amount of money. Travelling the Silk Road was hard and dangerous. Traders crossed the scorching Gobi Desert and the freezing Pamir Mountains. They faced bandits, sandstorms, and illness. Caravans — groups of traders travelling together — made the journey safer. Camels were the most useful animals because they could survive for days without water. Cities along the route became wealthy and powerful. Samarkand (in modern Uzbekistan) and Dunhuang (in China) became famous stops where merchants rested, traded, and exchanged cultures. Because so many different peoples met along the Silk Road, it became one of the first great bridges between civilisations.
