Iron Age: When Iron Changed Everything

Imagine you are trying to chop down a tree with a copper knife. The blade bends the moment it hits the wood. Frustrating! Now imagine swapping it for a blade twice as hard that holds its edge perfectly. That one change could transform your whole life — your farming, your safety, your tools. That is exactly what happened around 800 BCE when people in Britain began working with a new metal: iron.

The Iron Age in Britain lasted from around 800 BCE to 43 CE, when the Romans arrived. BCE means 'Before Common Era' — it counts years backwards before the year we call year 1. So 800 BCE was a very long time ago. Before the Iron Age, people used bronze — a mixture of copper and tin — to make tools and weapons. Bronze was useful, but iron ore (the rock iron comes from) was much easier to find across Europe and Asia. Once people learned to heat iron ore in a furnace hot enough to shape it, they could make stronger, sharper, and cheaper tools than ever before. Iron tools made farming much more efficient. Farmers used iron-tipped ploughs to break up harder soil, so they could grow more crops on more land. More food meant bigger communities. Across Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa, Iron Age peoples were all making this same discovery — sometimes independently — at different times between about 1200 BCE and 600 BCE. In Britain, Iron Age people lived in small villages of round houses. A roundhouse had thick walls made of wattle and daub (a mix of woven sticks and mud) and a thatched roof of straw. Families lived with their animals in winter for extra warmth. Many communities built hillforts — large forts on top of hills, surrounded by deep ditches and earth banks. Hillforts gave protection from rival groups and were sometimes home to hundreds of people. Maiden Castle in Dorset, England, is one of the largest hillforts in Europe. It covered about 47 acres — roughly 35 football pitches. Iron Age society was organised into tribes, each led by a chief or king. Skilled craftspeople, called smiths, were highly respected because they knew how to work iron and make weapons. Trade happened between tribes and across long distances — goods like pottery, salt, and iron blades were exchanged. Women in Iron Age Britain could hold power too. Historical sources suggest that leaders such as Boudicca, who led a famous revolt against the Romans much later, came from this tradition of powerful tribal figures.
