Bronze, Tools, and Cities: The Bronze Age

Imagine you only have stone tools. You want to cut wood, farm your land, and protect your family. Stone works — but it chips and breaks easily. Now imagine someone hands you a shiny, sharp metal tool that lasts far longer. Would that change your life? About 5,000 years ago, people discovered exactly that kind of tool. They called the new metal bronze, and it changed the world.

Historians divide early human history into ages named after the main material people used. First came the Stone Age, then the Bronze Age, and then the Iron Age. The Bronze Age began at different times in different places. In parts of the Middle East and South Asia, it started around 3300 BCE. In Britain and northern Europe, it began around 2500 BCE. BCE means 'Before the Common Era' — it counts years backwards from the year 0. Bronze is not found ready-made in the ground. People had to make it by mixing two metals together: copper and tin. When melted and combined, these two soft metals create bronze, which is much stronger than either one alone. This process is called smelting. Bronze was used to make sharper, longer-lasting tools such as axes, ploughs, and chisels. It was also used for weapons like swords and spears, and for jewellery and decorative objects. Because bronze tools were better, farmers could grow more food. More food meant more people could live together in one place. This helped early cities and towns grow. Trade also grew during the Bronze Age. Tin was not found everywhere, so people had to travel or trade across long distances to get it. This connected cultures across Europe, Asia, and Africa. We find evidence of Bronze Age life at sites such as Stonehenge in Britain (though Stonehenge was started in the Stone Age, it was added to during the Bronze Age), the city of Ur in modern-day Iraq, and the Indus Valley cities such as Mohenjo-daro in modern-day Pakistan.
