Factories, Smoke, and Steam: The Industrial Revolution Begins

Imagine you wake up tomorrow and every machine has disappeared. No washing machines, no cars, no electric lights. How would your day be different? For most of history, people lived exactly like that — doing everything by hand, on farms, in their homes. Then, around 1760, something big began to change. Things would never be the same again.

The word 'revolution' means a big, fast change. The Industrial Revolution was a period of huge change in the way people made things. It started in Britain around 1760 and spread to other parts of the world over the next hundred years. Before this time, most people lived in the countryside. They grew food on farms and made goods — like cloth and pots — slowly by hand at home. This was called cottage industry, because the work happened in people's own cottages. Then inventors created powerful machines. The most important was the steam engine, improved by a Scottish engineer called James Watt in the 1760s. Steam engines used burning coal to heat water. The steam pushed pistons — metal rods that move back and forth — to power machines much faster than human hands ever could. These machines needed a big building to hold them. Those buildings were called factories. People left their farms and moved to towns and cities to work in factories. Cities like Manchester, Birmingham, and Leeds in Britain grew very quickly. The changes were not only in Britain. Goods made in British factories were sold around the world, and other countries — including the United States, France, and Germany — soon built their own factories too. For many workers, factory life was hard. People worked long hours, and children as young as eight sometimes worked in factories or coal mines. At the same time, new machines meant more goods were made more cheaply, and slowly, living standards began to improve for many people.
