Life in the Middle Ages

The is the name we give to a long period of history in Europe. It lasted from around 500 CE to 1500 CE — that is about 1,000 years! Historians also call this period the '' era. The word medieval comes from Latin and simply means 'middle age.' After the great Roman Empire collapsed in 476 CE, Europe changed completely. People needed new ways to stay safe and to organise their communities. This is where the came in. THE FEUDAL SYSTEM The feudal system was a way of organising society like a pyramid. At the very top sat the king or queen. The king owned all the land in the kingdom. Below the king were powerful lords and nobles. The king gave them pieces of land called manors in exchange for loyalty and soldiers. Below the lords were knights — trained soldiers who fought on horseback. At the bottom of the pyramid were the s. Peasants made up the biggest group. They farmed the lord's land and gave some of their crops as payment. CASTLES Castles were built by lords to protect their land and people. Early castles were made of wood, but stone castles became common from around the 11th century. Castles had thick walls, towers, and sometimes a — a deep ditch filled with water — to stop enemies getting in. THE CHURCH Religion was central to medieval life. The Christian Church was very powerful across much of Europe. It ran schools, hospitals, and helped the poor. Huge churches called s were built in towns and cities. In other parts of the world during this same period, great Islamic empires were also thriving — for example, the in Baghdad was a centre of learning, science, and trade. TOWNS AND TRADE As the Middle Ages went on, towns grew bigger. Markets and fairs allowed merchants to buy and sell goods. Trade routes connected Europe with Africa and Asia, bringing spices, silk, and new ideas from far away.
