How Geographers Collect Data in the Field

Fieldwork is when geographers go out into the real world — a river, a town centre, a forest — to gather evidence directly. That evidence is called data.
There are two broad types of data:
**** is information you collect yourself, first-hand, at the location. It is original and specific to your enquiry.
**** is information that someone else has already collected and published — for example, census records, satellite images, or council traffic surveys. You use it to add context or compare with your own findings.
For most fieldwork, you rely mainly on primary data and use secondary data to support it.
Here are the most common primary data-collection methods geographers use:
**1. Tallying and counts** — You stand at a fixed point and count things as they pass or appear: cars, pedestrians, species of plant. A tally chart keeps the record organised. This works well for anything you can observe and count directly.
**2. Questionnaires and interviews** — You ask people a set of prepared questions about their opinions, habits, or experiences. Closed questions (yes/no, multiple choice) give data that is easy to compare. Open questions give richer detail but are harder to analyse.
**3. Measurements** — You use instruments such as a tape measure, rain gauge, flow meter, or clinometer to record precise values: river width, rainfall amount, slope angle. Measurements are quantitative — they give you numbers.
**4. Field sketches and annotated photographs** — You draw or photograph the landscape and add labels explaining features. These capture spatial detail that numbers alone cannot show.
**5. Environmental Quality Surveys (EQS)** — You use a scoring sheet to rate the quality of an environment (noise, litter, greenery, traffic) on a scale, for example 1–5. Different people complete the same sheet so you can compare results. Because the scores involve personal judgement, this is .
Choosing the right method depends on your . Ask yourself: Am I counting, measuring, asking, or observing? Is the data I need numerical or descriptive? How much time and equipment do I have?
Worked example
Enquiry question: 'Does pedestrian footfall decrease as you move further from the centre of Shrewsbury's market square?'
Step 1 — Identify what you need to count: the number of pedestrians passing a fixed point in a set time.
Method chosen: Tally count at five locations, each 50 metres further from the square's centre.
Why it fits: The question asks about numbers of people at different distances, so a tally count gives comparable numerical data across all five points. It is quick, needs no specialist equipment, and can be repeated at the same time each day to keep conditions fair.
Step 2 — Support with secondary data: download the council's existing footfall sensor data to check whether your counts follow the same pattern across a longer time period.
Why secondary data helps: It shows whether your single fieldwork day is typical or unusual.

Using more than one method, or combining primary and secondary data, usually gives a more complete and reliable answer.
