Two Kinds of Energy Resource
Energy resources fall into two main groups: non-renewable and renewable.
s are formed over millions of years from the remains of ancient plants and animals. Once burned, they cannot be replaced on a human timescale. Coal, oil, and natural gas — collectively called fossil fuels — belong to this group, as does nuclear fuel (uranium). Fossil fuels release carbon dioxide (CO₂) when burned, which is the main driver of climate change.

Why are energy resources unevenly distributed?
The location of an energy resource depends on physical geography. Coal, oil, and gas formed in specific geological conditions millions of years ago, so they only exist in certain rock formations. The Middle East — particularly Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and Kuwait — sits above enormous oil and gas reserves because ancient shallow seas once covered that region and left thick layers of organic sediment. Russia and the USA also hold huge reserves.
Renewable energy is also unevenly distributed, but in a different way. Countries near the equator — such as Morocco, India, and Australia — receive far more solar radiation than countries at high latitudes like Iceland. Iceland, however, sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, a line of volcanic activity, so it can generate around 66% of its electricity from alone. Norway has abundant rivers and mountain glaciers, making hydropower its dominant electricity source.
Environmental and economic impacts
Fossil fuels have powered industrial development and remain cheap to use in countries that already have the . However, they produce air pollution, acid rain, and CO₂ emissions that accelerate global warming. Oil spills, such as the Deepwater Horizon disaster in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, can devastate marine ecosystems.
Renewable energy produces far fewer emissions during operation. Wind and solar farms require large areas of land and can be visually controversial. Manufacturing solar panels requires rare minerals, and their supply chains have environmental costs. Hydroelectric dams — such as the Three Gorges Dam in China — generate clean electricity but flood large river valleys, displacing communities and harming river habitats.
No energy source is entirely without impact. Geographers must weigh economic, environmental, and social factors when evaluating energy choices.
