The River System: From Mountain to Sea

A river is not just a single stream of water — it is part of a whole system called a . A drainage basin is the entire area of land that collects rainfall and channels it into one main river and its branches. Think of it like a giant funnel built out of hills and valleys. The outer edge of this funnel — the high ridge of land that separates one drainage basin from another — is called the . Rain falling on one side of a watershed drains into one river system; rain on the other side drains into a completely different one.
Every river begins at its . The source is usually in high land, such as a lake, a glacier, or a spring where groundwater bubbles up to the surface. From the source, the river flows downhill, pulled by gravity. As it travels, smaller streams called tributaries join it at points called s, making the river progressively wider and deeper.
Geographers describe a river in three sections called courses.
In the upper course, close to the source, the river has a steep gradient (slope). The water moves fast, carving a narrow, deep V-shaped valley. The main process here is erosion — the river cuts downwards into the rock, wearing it away. Large boulders and rocks are transported by a process called traction, rolling along the riverbed.
In the middle course, the gradient becomes gentler. The river widens and begins to swing from side to side in S-shaped bends called s. On the outside of each bend, the water flows faster, eroding the bank and forming a river cliff. On the inside of the bend, water slows and drops its load of sediment, building up a gently sloping deposit called a slip-off slope. Over time, meanders can migrate across wide, flat s — areas of flat land beside the river that flood when river levels rise.
In the lower course, the river is at its widest and slowest. It carries huge amounts of fine sediment called silt. Where the river finally meets the sea or a lake, it reaches its . If the river drops its silt faster than the sea can wash it away, the sediment builds up to form a — a fan-shaped landmass that extends into the water. The Nile Delta in Egypt and the Ganges-Brahmaputra Delta in Bangladesh are famous examples.
Throughout all three courses, the river is doing three jobs at once: (wearing away rock and soil), transportation (carrying material downstream), and (dropping that material when it slows down). These three processes together are responsible for shaping the entire river landscape.
Worked example
Let's trace the River Nile to see these ideas in action. The Nile's most distant source is in the highlands of Burundi in central Africa, where streams feed into Lake Victoria. These streams are tributaries that drain the surrounding drainage basin. The river flows northward for around 6,650 km — making it one of the world's longest rivers. In its upper course through East Africa, the Nile cuts through rocky gorges. In its middle course through Sudan, it meanders across wide valleys. In its lower course through Egypt, it slows dramatically. At its mouth on the Mediterranean coast, it deposits vast quantities of silt, forming the Nile Delta — a triangle of fertile farmland about 240 km wide. Farmers have grown crops on this deposited silt for thousands of years.
