What Is GIS and How Does It Work?

GIS stands for Geographic Information System. It is a computer-based system that collects, stores, analyses, and displays data that is linked to locations on Earth. In simple terms, GIS connects information to places on a map so that patterns, relationships, and problems become visible. Think of GIS as a stack of transparent sheets laid on top of each other, where each sheet shows one type of information and all sheets share the same map underneath. HOW S WORK The bottom layer is always the base map — this might be a satellite image or a street map. On top of that, analysts add data layers. For example: • Layer 1 (base): satellite image of Lagos, Nigeria. • Layer 2: roads and railways. • Layer 3: population density — how many people live in each area. • Layer 4: locations of hospitals. • Layer 5: flood-risk zones. When you combine these layers, you can ask powerful questions. Which neighbourhoods with high population density are inside flood-risk zones AND more than 5 km from a hospital? GIS can calculate the answer in seconds, and display it as a colour-coded map. HOW DATA GETS INTO GIS Data enters GIS in two main ways. First, uses points, lines, and polygons (shapes) to represent features — a point for a school, a line for a river, a polygon for a country's border. Second, divides the land into a grid of tiny cells, and each cell holds a value — for example, temperature or land height. Satellite images are raster data. Every piece of data in a GIS has — a latitude and longitude — that pin it to the correct spot on Earth. This is what makes GIS different from an ordinary spreadsheet or database: every record has a location. WHO USES GIS? GIS is used by emergency services to plan evacuation routes during disasters, by conservationists to track endangered animal habitats, by city planners to decide where to build new schools, and by s (scientists who study disease spread) to map outbreaks of illness.
