Imagine you step outside your front door right now. What do you notice? Is it noisy or quiet? Are there trees, shops, or traffic? A geographer — someone who studies places and people — does exactly this. They go outside to look, listen, and record what they find. This is called fieldwork. Today you are going to find out how real geographers do it!

Fieldwork means going to a real place to collect information with your own eyes, ears, and simple tools. Instead of only reading about geography in a book, you go outside and investigate for yourself. Geographers use several key methods in the field. First, they observe and record. They look carefully at a place and write notes on a fieldwork sheet — a printed grid or table that helps you stay organised. You might write down: What can I see? What can I hear? What does it smell like? Second, they sketch and annotate. To annotate means to add labels to a drawing. You draw what you see — a river, a road, a building — and add labels to explain the important parts. Third, they count and tally. A tally is a simple counting method using lines, like IIII with a cross through for five. Geographers might count how many cars pass in one minute, or how many people use a park bench. Fourth, they use a field map. A field map is a simple map of the area you are visiting. You mark on it where you collected your data — data means the information you gather — using symbols or dots. Finally, they use photographs to show evidence. A photo gives proof of what a place looked like on that day. Let's look at a worked example to see how this comes together.
