Discovering Oceania and Antarctica

Imagine you are an explorer on a ship in the middle of the world's biggest ocean — the Pacific Ocean. You look around and see tiny islands dotted across the water. Some have tall volcanoes. Some have coral reefs full of colour. Far to the south, you spot enormous chunks of floating ice. Where could you be? Today you are going to find out!

The world is split into regions — large areas that share something in common. Two of the most exciting regions are Oceania and Antarctica. **Oceania** is a region made up of thousands of islands and island groups spread across the Pacific Ocean, plus Australia and New Zealand. It sits mostly in the Southern Hemisphere — the bottom half of Earth. Key countries in Oceania include Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Fiji, and Samoa. Australia is special because it is both a country and a continent — the smallest continent on Earth. Oceania has incredibly varied landscapes: hot deserts in central Australia, thick rainforests in Papua New Guinea, and beautiful coral reefs like the Great Barrier Reef off Australia's coast. **Antarctica** is the continent at the very bottom of Earth, surrounding the South Pole. It is almost entirely covered by a thick ice sheet — a giant layer of ice and snow. Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, and driest continent on the planet. No countries own it; instead, many nations signed an agreement called the Antarctic Treaty to protect it for science and nature. No humans live there permanently, but scientists stay at research stations to study the climate, wildlife, and ice. These two regions are very different. Oceania is warm, populated, and full of biodiversity — meaning a huge variety of plants and animals. Antarctica is frozen, empty of permanent human life, and one of the last truly wild places on Earth.
