Where in the World Does Your Stuff Come From?

Look around you right now. Your T-shirt, your phone, the food on your plate — did any of them come from another country? Pick up one object near you and think: where might it have been made? You might be surprised. A chocolate bar could contain cocoa grown in Ghana. Your trainers might have been made in Vietnam. The world is full of goods that travel huge distances to reach you.

Every country in the world is good at producing certain things. This is because of its climate, land, and skills. For example, Colombia has warm, wet highlands that are perfect for growing coffee. Japan has expert engineers who make high-quality electronics. No country can produce everything it needs on its own, so countries buy and sell things with each other. This is called trade. When a country sells something to another country, we say it exports that product. When a country buys something from another country, we say it imports it. The things that are bought and sold are called goods. Goods can be food, clothing, machines, fuel, or raw materials like wood and metal. Think about the United Kingdom. The UK imports bananas from Ecuador and Colombia because bananas cannot grow in the cool British climate. But the UK exports things like medicines and cars to other countries, because it has factories and scientists that produce them well. Countries also trade services — things you cannot hold, like banking, tourism, or software. But most early trade was about physical goods, and goods are still a huge part of world trade today. Trade links countries together. When you buy a product made abroad, money travels from your country to the country that made it. That money helps workers and businesses in that country. Trade can help countries grow richer and give people access to things that would otherwise be impossible to find at home.
