Humans use them to make energy, food, buildings, and products. Geographers split natural resources into two big groups. The first group is s. These are resources that can be replaced naturally in a short time. Sunlight is always arriving from the Sun. Wind keeps blowing. Trees can be replanted. Fresh water fills back up when it rains. Because these resources can be replaced, we can keep using them without running out — as long as we are careful. The second group is s. These formed over millions of years deep inside the Earth. Coal, oil, and natural gas are called s because they formed from ancient plants and animals. Metal s — rocks that contain metals like iron, copper, and gold — are also non-renewable. Once we dig them up and use them, they are gone. We cannot make more. Natural resources are not spread evenly around the world. The Middle East — countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iraq — sits above huge pools of oil underground. The Amazon rainforest in South America holds one of the world's largest supplies of fresh water and timber. The Democratic Republic of Congo in Africa contains some of the world's richest deposits of copper and cobalt. Iceland uses — heat from volcanoes underground — because it sits on top of very active volcanoes. Because resources are spread unevenly, countries trade with each other. A country that has lots of oil may sell it to a country that has very little.

Worked example

Let's sort two resources together. WOOD: Trees grow from seeds, can be replanted, and a new tree grows in decades. So wood is a RENEWABLE resource. OIL: Oil formed from tiny sea creatures that died about 300 million years ago, were buried, and slowly turned into liquid fuel. Drilling uses it up and we cannot make more. So oil is a NON-RENEWABLE resource.
