Weather vs Climate: What's the Difference?

Look outside right now — or think about this morning. Is it sunny, cloudy, rainy, or windy? Now think about this: if someone asked you what the weather is like in the Sahara Desert, would you say 'it depends on the day' or 'it is usually hot and dry'? You would probably say hot and dry — because you already know something about its climate, even if you have never been there! Weather is what the atmosphere — the layer of air around Earth — is doing right now, or on a particular day. It can change very quickly. One morning might be sunny, and by the afternoon it could be raining. Weather includes things like temperature, rainfall, wind, and cloud cover. Climate is different. Climate is the pattern of weather in a place over a very long time — usually 30 years or more. It tells us what the weather in a place is normally like. Climate changes very slowly. Here is a helpful way to remember the difference: weather is your mood today, and climate is your personality. Your mood can change quickly, but your personality stays mostly the same over time. Let's look at two real places. London, in the UK, has a temperate climate — this means it has mild temperatures, some rain throughout the year, and no extreme heat or cold. But on any single day in London, it might be sunny or stormy. That daily condition is the weather. Now look at the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, South America. Its climate is tropical — hot and very rainy most of the year. If you visited on one afternoon, it might not be raining at that exact moment. But the climate tells us that rain is very common there. So remember: weather is short-term and changes day to day. Climate is long-term and describes the usual conditions in a place.
