A is the place where land meets the sea. Coasts are found all around the edges of continents and islands. Some coasts are flat and sandy, but others have tall, dramatic cliffs. Waves are always moving towards the shore. They carry enormous energy. When waves crash into rock at the coast, they slowly break the rock apart. This process is called — the wearing away of rock and land by water, wind, or ice. At the coast, wave erosion is the main force at work. Here is how a cliff forms, step by step: 1. Waves crash against the base of a slope of rock, again and again. 2. Over time, the waves carve out a small hollow at the bottom of the rock. This hollow is called a . 3. The rock above the notch has no support, so it eventually breaks off and tumbles into the sea. 4. This leaves behind a steep rock face called a . 5. As waves keep eroding, the cliff slowly moves further inland — the sea claims more land. Not all rock erodes at the same speed. Soft rocks like chalk and clay wear away faster. Hard rocks like granite resist erosion and stay standing longer. This is why coastlines have an uneven, jagged shape. Coastlines also have other features. A beach forms when eroded pieces of rock — called sediment — are dropped by waves in calmer water. Sea caves form when waves carve a hole into a cliff.
