A river does not just appear fully formed. It begins as a tiny trickle of water high up in hills or mountains, and it grows bigger and bigger as it travels downhill towards the sea. We divide this journey into three stages: the upper course, the middle course, and the lower course. **The Upper Course — The Beginning** The starting point of a river is called the . The source is usually high up in mountains or hills, where rain soaks into the ground or where snow melts. The water collects and begins to flow downhill. In the upper course, the river is narrow and shallow. It moves quickly because the land is steep. The fast water crashes over rocks and cuts deep, V-shaped valleys. Waterfalls are common here. **The Middle Course — Getting Stronger** As the river moves further downhill, the land becomes less steep. The river grows wider and deeper.
