What Is a Mountain — and How Do They Form?

A is a large landform that rises steeply above the land around it. Most geographers agree a mountain must be at least 300 metres tall, though many are far higher. Hills are smaller and have gentler, rounder slopes. Mountains usually have a peak — a pointed or rocky top. Mountains do not appear overnight. They take millions of years to form. There are three main ways this happens. 1. FOLD MOUNTAINS — When two of Earth's slowly crash into each other, the land between them crumples and folds upwards, like a rug being pushed from both ends. The Himalayas in Asia — home to Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain at 8,849 metres — were made this way. The Alps in Europe are too. 2. S — When molten rock (called magma) bursts through the Earth's surface, it cools and piles up over time to build a mountain. Mount Fuji in Japan is a famous volcanic mountain. 3. BLOCK MOUNTAINS — Sometimes huge blocks of rock are pushed upwards along cracks in the Earth's crust called faults. The Sierra Nevada range in the USA formed this way. Mountains affect the weather, rivers, and wildlife around them. Rain and snow fall heavily on mountain slopes. This water flows down to fill rivers that billions of people use for drinking and farming.

Let's look at the Himalayas. Find Asia on a world map — it is the large continent to the right of Europe. The Himalayas stretch across five countries: India, Nepal, Bhutan, China, and Pakistan. They are fold mountains. Millions of years ago, the Indian tectonic plate crashed slowly into the Eurasian plate. The land crumpled upwards to form these massive peaks. Mount Everest, on the border of Nepal and China, is 8,849 metres tall — that is more than 29 times taller than the Eiffel Tower!
