Coursework Ready: Plan, Draft, and Polish Like a Pro

This is the most common coursework mistake — not reading the criteria closely enough before you start. Coursework is any extended piece of writing you complete over several days or weeks, usually with access to notes and time to redraft. Because you have more time than in an exam, assessors expect higher quality — careful structure, precise language, and clear evidence of thinking. That raises the stakes, but it also gives you a real advantage if you follow a process. **Stage 1 — Plan (before you write a single sentence)** Start by unpacking the task. Underline the command word (e.g. 'analyse', 'compare', 'argue') and the focus (e.g. 'how the writer creates tension'). Then read the assessment criteria — the list of skills your teacher or examiner will mark against. Write each criterion as a question you must answer through your writing. For example, if a criterion says 'sustained and developed ideas', ask yourself: 'Where in my response do I develop an idea across more than one paragraph?' Now map your ideas onto those questions. A spider diagram or numbered list both work well. Aim for one idea per paragraph, each tied to at least one criterion. **Stage 2 — Draft (write with the criteria visible)** Print or write out the criteria and keep them beside you as you draft. Treat your first draft as a working document, not a final product. Write freely to get your ideas down, but pause at the end of each paragraph and ask: 'Which criterion does this paragraph address? Is my point clear?' If you cannot answer, revise that paragraph before moving on. This prevents you from drifting off-topic, which is another very common error. **Stage 3 — Polish (self-review before submission)** Polishing means more than fixing spelling. Use a self-review checklist to evaluate your draft against every criterion. Check for: (1) a clear line of argument or purpose running through the whole piece; (2) paragraphs that are developed, not just listed; (3) varied sentence structures and precise vocabulary; (4) accurate punctuation and grammar; (5) a strong opening and a satisfying conclusion. After self-review, read your work aloud — your ear catches awkward phrasing your eye misses. Finally, act on what you find: targeted revision at this stage can lift your mark significantly.
