Two Ways to Find Answers

When you answer questions about a text, there are two main ways to find your answer. **Way 1: it.** This means the answer is written clearly in the passage. You just need to find the right sentence. For example, if the text says 'Mia had a red bicycle', you can retrieve the answer to 'What colour is Mia's bicycle?' easily. **Way 2: it.** This means the answer is NOT written out for you. You have to use clues in the text and your own thinking to work it out. For example, if the text says 'Mia's hands were shaking as she rang the doorbell', the author never writes 'Mia was nervous', but the clue 'hands were shaking' tells you she probably felt nervous. A good reader asks two questions: • 'Where in the text does it say this?' (for retrieving) • 'What clues in the text help me work this out?' (for inferring) Always go back to the text and point to the exact words that support your answer. This is called using ****. **Read this short passage carefully:** --- *The old lighthouse stood at the edge of the cliffs. Every night, Tomás climbed its 112 steps to switch on the great light. Tonight, the wind howled and rain lashed the windows. He pulled his coat tighter and moved faster up the stairs. Ships were out there in the dark, and they needed him.* --- Now look at the worked example below.

Question 1 (retrieve): How many steps does Tomás climb each night? Answer: 112 steps. Evidence: The text says 'climbed its 112 steps' — the number is written clearly, so we retrieve it. Question 2 (infer): How does Tomás feel about his job? Answer: He feels it is important and he is determined to do it. Evidence: The text says 'Ships were out there in the dark, and they needed him.' He goes out even in a storm, which shows he takes his responsibility seriously. The author never uses the word 'determined', but the clues tell us.
