The Building Blocks of a Speech

A speech is a piece of writing that is read aloud to an — the people listening to you. Unlike a story or an essay, a speech speaks directly to the people in the room. That means every word needs to feel personal and powerful. **1. Know your and AUDIENCE.** Before you write a single word, ask yourself: Why am I giving this speech? Am I trying to (convince), inform (teach), or inspire (motivate) my audience? And who are my listeners? A speech for young children sounds very different from one for adults. **2. Structure your speech in three parts.** • OPENING — Greet your audience and hook them straight away. Start with a surprising fact, a question, or a bold statement. For example: 'Did you know that the average child spends more time on screens than sleeping?' • MIDDLE — Share your two or three main points. Give a reason and, if you can, an example for each one. • ENDING — Finish with a call to action (tell your audience what you want them to do or think) or a memorable line that echoes your opening. **3.
