Tying Up the Knot: How Stories Find Their Ending

Imagine your shoelace is tangled into a huge, messy knot. You pull at it, work at the loops, and — finally — it comes free. That feeling of relief is exactly what a good story ending gives readers. Think about a story you know well. Maybe it's a fairy tale, a book you love, or a film. At some point in that story, something went very wrong for the main character. Can you remember what the problem was? Hold that thought — you're going to need it soon.

Every story follows a shape. A character wants something or faces a problem. Things get harder and more exciting — this is called the build-up or climax. Then, at the end, the problem gets sorted out. That sorting-out moment is called the resolution. The resolution is where the knot gets untied. A resolution does three important jobs: 1. It solves the main problem the character was facing. 2. It shows how the character has changed or what they have learned. 3. It gives the reader a feeling of 'that's finished' — this feeling is called closure. Resolutions can feel different depending on the story. In many fairy tales, the resolution is happy: the dragon is defeated, the friends are reunited, everyone is safe. In other stories, the resolution can be bittersweet — something is gained but something is also lost. Some resolutions even leave a small question in the reader's mind on purpose. The most important thing is that the main problem from earlier in the story must be answered. If a writer forgets to resolve the big problem, readers feel confused or cheated. Here is a simple way to spot a resolution: • Ask: 'What was the big problem?' • Ask: 'Is that problem answered by the end?' • Ask: 'How does the character feel now compared to the beginning?' If you can answer all three questions, you have found the resolution.
