What Is a Story Dilemma?

A is a problem where a character must choose between two options. Both options feel important — or both seem risky. Neither choice is perfectly safe or easy. That is what makes a dilemma different from a simple problem. When a character faces a dilemma, they usually have TWO things pulling them in different directions. We call these '' or 'competing feelings'. For example, a character might want to be honest but also wants to protect a friend. Both matter — so the choice is painful. A dilemma makes a story exciting because readers start to wonder: what will the character do? Will they choose loyalty? Will they choose honesty? We feel the tension alongside the character. Strong dilemmas have three things: 1. Two clear options the character could pick. 2. A real reason each option matters. 3. A — something that happens because of the choice. A consequence is the result or outcome of a decision.

Worked example

Read this short passage: 'Mia saw her best friend Priya copy answers from another pupil's test. Mia knew that cheating was wrong. But if she told the teacher, Priya would never forgive her. If she said nothing, the cheating would go on.' Let's identify the dilemma: • Option 1: Tell the teacher. Reason it matters: cheating is unfair to others. • Option 2: Stay silent. Reason it matters: she wants to keep her friendship. • Consequence of Option 1: Priya may be punished and stop being Mia's friend. • Consequence of Option 2: Cheating continues and Mia feels guilty. This is a strong dilemma because BOTH options carry a real cost. Mia cannot win without losing something.
