What Is a Story Build-Up?

Most stories follow a shape. First comes the opening, where we meet the characters and setting. After that comes the . The build-up is the part of the story where events start to move. Things begin to change, small problems appear, and a feeling of 'something is about to happen' grows. The build-up leads the reader towards the — the big, exciting trouble at the heart of the story. Think of it like climbing a hill. The opening is at the bottom. Each build-up event is a step upward. At the top of the hill is the main problem — the most dramatic moment. Every step in the build-up makes the reader want to know: what happens next? Here are the tricks authors use in a build-up: • They add small s that trouble is coming ('She noticed the door was open — but she had closed it that morning.'). • They show a character moving towards danger or a new place. • They build up a character's worry or excitement. • They use short sentences to make the pace feel faster. A good build-up does NOT give everything away. It teases. It hints. It makes you lean forward.
