From Spark to Statement: Developing a Strong Art Concept

Look at two imaginary artworks in your mind. The first is a painting of a red apple sitting on a table. The second is a painting of a rotting apple, half-eaten, casting a long shadow — with a child's handwriting scrawled across the wall behind it, reading 'Still here.' Both involve an apple. But one makes you think, feel, and question. Why? The difference is not skill alone. It is concept. Before you learn how to develop a concept, ask yourself: what is the most powerful piece of art you have ever seen, heard, or experienced? What do you think the artist was trying to say?
