Mastering Pastels: Colour, Texture, and Blending

Imagine pressing a stick of coloured chalk against textured paper and watching it crumble slightly, leaving a dusty, glowing trail of pigment. Now imagine rubbing your fingertip across it — the colour shifts, softens, and blends into something almost luminous. That is the magic of pastel. Before you dive in, think about this: you have probably used wax crayons and paint. How do you think a medium that is part chalk, part pure pigment, might behave differently from both of those?
