Can a flat mark fool your eye?

Can a flat mark fool your eye?

Look at a simple circle drawn on paper. It is perfectly flat — just a line on a surface. Now imagine shading one side dark and leaving the other pale. Suddenly your brain reads it as a sphere. How does that happen? Tone is the secret. Before you read further, try this: close one eye and hold your hand up to a light source. Notice how one side of your fingers is bright and the other falls into shadow. That shift from light to dark is tone at work — and artists have used it for centuries to make drawings and paintings feel real.
