Shape It! Making Clay Sculptures

Imagine you have a lump of soft clay in your hands right now. You can push it, pull it, roll it, and pinch it into any shape you like. You could make a tiny snail, a roaring lion, or a little house. Clay has been used by people for thousands of years to make pots, figures, and art. Today you are going to discover how sculptors — artists who make 3D objects — use clever techniques to turn a simple lump of clay into something amazing.

A sculpture is a three-dimensional (3D) piece of art — it has height, width, and depth, so you can look at it from all sides. This is different from a drawing, which is flat on paper. Clay is a natural material that is soft and easy to shape when wet, but it hardens when it dries or is baked in a hot oven called a kiln. Sculptors use several key techniques to work with clay: 🖐 PINCHING — Push your thumb into the clay and squeeze it between your thumb and fingers. This is great for making small pots or hollow shapes. 🌀 ROLLING — Roll the clay on a flat surface with your palms to make a smooth ball, or roll it back and forth with your fingers to make a long snake shape called a coil. 🔨 SLABBING — Flatten the clay into a thick, even sheet called a slab. You can then cut shapes from it or fold it to make walls. 🔗 JOINING — When you stick two pieces of clay together, you must use the score and slip method. First, scratch both surfaces with a fork or tool (this is called scoring). Then brush on a little watery clay called slip, and press the pieces firmly together. Without this step, the pieces fall apart when the clay dries. ✂️ ADDING AND CARVING — You can add small pieces of clay to build up texture and detail, or use a tool to carve patterns into the surface. A good sculpture starts with a plan. Think about the main shape first — this is called the form. Then add smaller details on top.
