Colour Opposites: The Magic of Complementary Colours

Stare at the red circle on your screen for 30 seconds. Then look at a plain white wall or piece of paper. What colour do you see? Most people see a faint green shape — the opposite of red! Your eyes have been playing a trick on you. This hint tells you something powerful about how colours work together. Today you will find out why.

Look at a colour wheel — a circle that shows all the colours in order. The colours are arranged so that colours made by mixing light (red, yellow, blue) sit evenly around the circle. Complementary colours are two colours that sit directly opposite each other on the colour wheel. There are three main pairs: • Red and Green • Blue and Orange • Yellow and Purple (violet) When you place complementary colours next to each other, something exciting happens — they make each other look more vivid and intense. Artists say the colours 'vibrate' because your eyes jump between the two opposites very quickly. Why does this happen? Each complementary pair contains no colours in common. Red and green share no mix. Blue and orange share no mix. Because they are so different, each colour makes the other stand out as much as possible. When you MIX complementary colours together (on a palette, not on paper), you get a muddy brown or grey. That is useful too — artists use it to make shadows look natural. Famous artists used complementary colours on purpose. Vincent van Gogh placed blue skies next to orange fields to make his paintings feel full of energy. Henri Matisse filled pictures with red and green so every part felt alive.
