Alive, Adapted, Amazing: Living Things and Their World

Look around the room right now. You might see a chair, a plant on the windowsill, a fly buzzing past, and a pencil on the desk. Here is the big question: which of these things are alive? A chair looks solid and real — but is it living? A tiny seed looks completely still — but is it living? This puzzle has fascinated scientists for hundreds of years. Today you are going to crack it.

Scientists use a checklist to decide if something is living. Living things share seven key features: they grow, they move, they breathe, they eat or make their own food, they sense their surroundings, they get rid of waste, and they can reproduce — meaning they can make new living things like themselves. A stone does none of these things. A dog does all of them. But what about a cactus? It grows slowly, it makes its own food using sunlight, and it can reproduce by making seeds. The cactus is definitely alive. What do living things need? All living things need: energy (food or sunlight), water, air, and the right temperature. Take away any one of these and a living thing will struggle to survive. Now here comes the really interesting part — adaptation. An adaptation is a special feature that helps a living thing survive in its home environment. Different places on Earth have very different conditions, and living things have features that match those conditions perfectly. Look at these two examples: 1. A cactus lives in a hot, dry desert. It has thick, waxy skin to stop water escaping, and it stores water inside its fat stem. Its leaves have turned into spines to save water and to protect it from animals. Every feature saves water — because water is the hardest thing to find in the desert. 2. A fish lives in water. It has a streamlined — smooth and pointed — body shape so it can slide through water easily. It has gills instead of lungs, which pull oxygen out of water. It has fins to steer and push itself forward. Every feature suits life underwater. You can see the same idea with plants: a water lily has wide flat leaves that float on the surface to catch as much sunlight as possible, while a pine tree has needle-like leaves so heavy snow slides off without breaking the branches. Adaptations do not happen overnight. They build up over very long periods of time. But the result is that each living thing fits its environment like a key fits a lock.
