Same Material, New Shape: Physical Changes!

Imagine you have a ball of clay. You press it flat. It looks different now — but is it still clay? Think about that for a moment. Has it turned into something else, or is it still the same stuff? This is exactly the question we are going to explore today.

A physical change happens when a material changes its shape, size, or form — but it stays the same material. No new material is made. You could often change it back. Think about a piece of paper. You can fold it into a boat shape. It looks very different, but it is still paper. If you unfold it, you still have paper. The material did not change — only the shape did. Now think about a chocolate bar. You snap it in half. It is now two smaller pieces, but both pieces are still chocolate. Breaking it did not turn it into something new. Here is a helpful way to remember: ask yourself, 'Is it still the same stuff?' If the answer is yes, it is a physical change. Physical changes you might see every day include: • Cutting vegetables — a carrot cut into slices is still carrot. • Scrunching paper — the paper is still paper. • Bending a pipe cleaner — it is still metal wire inside. • Stretching a rubber band — it is still rubber. A physical change is different from a chemical change. In a chemical change, a brand-new material is made (like when wood burns and turns to ash).
