Spot the Difference: Animals, Plants, and Their Homes

Imagine you are standing in a garden. You see a rose bush, a sparrow, a pond, an oak tree, and a frog. Which of these do you think belongs somewhere else — and why? Think about where each one lives and what it needs to survive. There is no wrong answer yet — just think!

All living things — animals and plants — share some things in common. They all need water and energy to survive. Animals get energy by eating food. Plants make their own energy using sunlight. This is one big difference between them. Animals can move around to find food and shelter. Plants stay rooted in one place. Both animals and plants can grow, reproduce (make more of themselves), and respond to their environment. Now think about where they live. A habitat is the natural home of a living thing. It gives the creature everything it needs — food, water, shelter, and the right climate (weather conditions over time). Different habitats look very different. A rainforest is warm and wet. A desert is dry and hot. A pond is full of fresh water. Living things in the same habitat often share similarities because they are suited to the same conditions. For example, a frog and a water lily both live in a pond. Both can survive in wet conditions. But the frog is an animal — it moves, catches insects, and breathes air. The water lily is a plant — it floats, makes food from sunlight, and stays in one place. They are similar in some ways and different in others.
