The Four Main Parts of a Plant
Plants have four important parts. Roots are below the ground. The stem holds the plant up. Leaves grow on the stem. Flowers are pretty and colourful. Each part does a special job!
Roots
Roots grow down into the soil. They hold the plant in place. Roots also drink water from the ground. Without roots, a plant would fall over!
Stem
The stem is like a straw. It carries water up to the leaves. The stem keeps the plant standing tall. Some stems are green, some are brown.
Leaves and Flowers
Leaves are usually green and flat. They catch sunlight to help the plant grow. Flowers are bright and can smell lovely. Flowers make seeds for new plants.
Worked examples
1. Look at a daisy. What part is under the ground?
- The daisy has parts above and below ground.
- Roots are the part that grows underground.
- The roots hold the daisy in the soil.
2. You see a tall sunflower. What holds it up?
- The sunflower is very tall and heavy.
- The stem is strong and holds it up.
- Without the stem it would fall down.
3. A rose has red petals. Which part is this?
- The red petals are pretty and bright.
- Petals are part of the flower.
- The flower is at the top of the plant.
