Sort things by shape, size, or colour.
What does sorting mean?
Sorting means putting things into groups. We put things that are the same together. Things that match go in the same group!
Sorting by shape
Shapes have names like circle, square, and triangle. We can put all the circles together. Then all the squares together. Each shape gets its own group!
Sorting by size
Size means how big or small something is. We can put big things in one group. Small things go in another group. Medium things make a third group!
Sorting by colour
Colours are like red, blue, yellow, and green. We can group all the red things together. All the blue things go together too. Each colour gets its own pile!
Why do we sort?
Sorting helps us find things easily. It keeps everything tidy and organised. Sorting makes counting easier too. You are doing great learning to sort!
Worked examples
1. Sort these by shape: 3 circles, 2 squares, 1 triangle. How many circles?
- Look at each shape carefully.
- Put all the circles in one group.
- Count the circles: 1, 2, 3.
- There are 3 circles!
2. Sort by colour: 4 red balls, 5 blue balls. How many blue balls?
- Look at the colour of each ball.
- Put red balls in one group.
- Put blue balls in another group.
- Count the blue balls: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
- There are 5 blue balls!
3. Sort by size: 2 big blocks, 6 small blocks. How many small blocks?
- Look at how big each block is.
- Put big blocks together.
- Put small blocks together.
- Count the small blocks: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.
- There are 6 small blocks!
