Meet the Four Shapes
Today we learn four special shapes. They are circle, square, triangle and rectangle. You see these shapes everywhere around you!
Circle
A circle is round like a ball. It has no corners at all. It is smooth all the way around.
Square
A square has four corners. All four sides are the same length. It looks like a box.
Triangle
A triangle has three corners and three sides. It looks like a party hat or a roof.
Rectangle
A rectangle has four corners too. Two sides are long and two are short. A door is shaped like a rectangle.
Worked examples
1. This shape is round with no corners. What is it?
- Look at the shape carefully.
- It is round all the way around.
- It has no corners at all.
- This is a circle!
2. This shape has three sides. What is it?
- Count the sides: one, two, three.
- Count the corners: one, two, three.
- A shape with three sides is a triangle!
3. This shape has four equal sides. What is it?
- Count the sides: four sides.
- All the sides are the same length.
- This is a square!
