What does taking away mean?

Taking away means you start with some things. Then you remove some. You count what is left. If you have 5 apples and eat 2, you take away 2. You have 3 apples left!

Using your fingers

Hold up the number you start with on your fingers. Put down the number you take away. Count the fingers still up. That's your answer! Try it yourself.

The minus sign

The minus sign looks like this: −. It means take away. When you see 7 − 3, it means start with 7 and take away 3. The answer is 4.

What's left over?

Taking away helps us find what's left. If 6 birds sit on a fence and 2 fly away, how many are left? Take away 2 from 6. The answer is 4 birds.

Practice makes perfect

The more you practise taking away, the easier it gets! You can use toys, draw pictures, or count in your head. You're doing brilliantly!
