The World's Tallest Mountains

Mountains are huge landforms that rise high above the ground around them. The tallest mountain in the world is Mount Everest in Asia. It reaches 8,849 metres into the sky! Everest sits on the border between Nepal and Tibet. Climbers from all over the world dream of reaching its snowy peak. The air at the top is very thin and cold.

Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa at 5,895 metres tall. It stands in Tanzania, a country in East Africa. Unlike Everest, Kilimanjaro is not part of a mountain range. It is a special kind of mountain called a volcano. The top is covered in snow and ice, even though it is near the Equator!

The Andes Mountain Range

The Andes is the longest mountain range in the world. It stretches about 7,000 kilometres down the west side of South America. The Andes goes through seven countries, including Peru, Chile and Argentina. Many peaks in the Andes are over 6,000 metres high. People have lived in these mountains for thousands of years.

Why Mountains Matter

Mountains help create weather patterns and provide fresh water from melting snow. Many rivers start high in the mountains and flow down to valleys. Animals like snow leopards and mountain goats live on mountain slopes. People visit mountains to climb, hike and enjoy the beautiful views.
