What is rhyming?
Words rhyme when their endings sound the same. Cat and hat rhyme because they both end with 'at'. Sun and fun rhyme too! Rhyming makes words sound musical together.
Listen to the end
To find rhymes, listen carefully to the end sound. The word 'dog' ends with 'og'. The word 'frog' also ends with 'og'. They rhyme! The beginning can be different.
Rhymes are fun
Rhyming words are everywhere in songs and stories. When you find rhymes, you are being a word detective! Keep listening and you will find lots of rhymes.
Try clapping
Say two words out loud and clap at the end. Do the claps sound the same? If yes, the words rhyme! Try it with 'bee' and 'tree'.
Worked examples
1. Do 'cat' and 'mat' rhyme?
- Say 'cat' out loud. It ends with 'at'.
- Say 'mat' out loud. It ends with 'at' too.
- The endings sound the same, so yes they rhyme!
2. Do 'dog' and 'ball' rhyme?
- Say 'dog' out loud. It ends with 'og'.
- Say 'ball' out loud. It ends with 'all'.
- The endings sound different, so no they don't rhyme.
3. Which word rhymes with 'sun': run or red?
- Say 'sun' and 'run' together. Both end with 'un'.
- Say 'sun' and 'red' together. They sound different.
- The answer is 'run' because it rhymes with 'sun'.
