Every Story Has Three Parts

A story has a beginning, middle, and end. The beginning starts the story. The middle is what happens next. The end finishes the story. Just like your day: wake up, play, go to bed!

The Beginning

The beginning tells us who is in the story. It tells us where they are. It starts everything off. We meet the characters at the beginning.

The Middle

The middle is the exciting part! Something happens here. The characters do things or solve problems. This is usually the longest part of the story.

The End

The end wraps everything up. It shows how things worked out. The problem gets solved. Everyone knows the story is finished now.

Why Order Matters

Stories must go in the right order. You cannot eat breakfast before you wake up! Beginning, middle, end makes sense. Reading stories this way helps us understand them better.

Worked examples

  1. 1. Put these in order: The cat slept. The cat climbed a tree. A cat saw a bird.

    1. First, find the beginning. 'A cat saw a bird' starts it.
    2. Next, find the middle. 'The cat climbed a tree' happens next.
    3. Last, find the end. 'The cat slept' finishes the story.
    4. Answer: A cat saw a bird, climbed a tree, then slept.

  2. 2. Put these in order: She ate it. Mum made a cake. The cake was yummy.

    1. The beginning is 'Mum made a cake.' That starts it.
    2. The middle is 'She ate it.' That happens next.
    3. The end is 'The cake was yummy.' That finishes it.
    4. Answer: Mum made a cake, she ate it, it was yummy.

  3. 3. Put these in order: He went home happy. Tom found his ball. Tom lost his ball.

    1. Beginning: 'Tom lost his ball.' This is the problem.
    2. Middle: 'Tom found his ball.' He solves the problem.
    3. End: 'He went home happy.' Everything is sorted now.
    4. Answer: Tom lost his ball, found it, went home happy.
