What does it mean to turn a fraction into a decimal?
A fraction shows a part of something, like ½. A decimal uses a point to show parts, like 0.5. They can show exactly the same amount! We can change fractions into decimals by dividing the top number by the bottom number.
Easy fractions you already know
Some fractions are quick to change. Half is ½, which equals 0.5. A quarter is ¼, which equals 0.25. Three quarters is ¾, which equals 0.75. These come up all the time!
How to change any fraction into a decimal
Take the top number (the numerator) and divide it by the bottom number (the denominator). For example, to change ⅖ into a decimal, do 2 ÷ 5. That gives 0.4. The numerator is the number on top. The denominator is the number on the bottom.
Tenths and hundredths are special
Fractions with 10 or 100 on the bottom are really easy! For 3/10, just write 0.3. For 7/100, write 0.07. The bottom number tells you how many places after the decimal point.
Practice makes it quick
The more you practise, the faster you get. Soon you will remember common ones like ⅕ equals 0.2 and ⅛ equals 0.125. Keep trying and it becomes second nature!
Worked examples
1. Convert ¾ into a decimal.
- Look at the fraction: 3 is the top number, 4 is the bottom.
- Divide the top by the bottom: 3 ÷ 4.
- 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75.
- So ¾ = 0.75.
2. Convert ⅕ into a decimal.
- The top number is 1, the bottom is 5.
- Divide: 1 ÷ 5.
- 1 ÷ 5 = 0.2.
- So ⅕ = 0.2.
3. Convert 7/10 into a decimal.
- The bottom number is 10, so this is easy!
- 7 tenths means 7 in the first place after the point.
- 7/10 = 0.7.
