Rocks, Soils, and What Hides Beneath Your Feet

Imagine digging a hole in your garden or a park. First you hit soft, dark soil. Dig deeper and — crunch — you hit hard rock. Have you ever picked up a pebble at the beach or a stone on a path? Rocks are all around us, even under your feet right now. Think about two rocks or stones you have seen before. Were they the same colour? The same texture — smooth or rough? This lesson will help you understand why rocks look and feel different, and where soil comes from.

Rocks are solid, natural materials that make up Earth's surface. Scientists who study rocks are called geologists. Even though all rocks are hard compared to soil, they are not the same. Rocks differ in three main ways. **Colour** — Granite (a common rock found in kitchen worktops) is often grey, pink, or white with speckles. Sandstone is usually pale orange or yellow. The minerals inside a rock give it its colour. Minerals are the natural chemical building blocks that make up rocks. **Texture** — Run your finger across different rocks and you will feel a difference. Some rocks, like sandstone, feel rough and gritty. Others, like marble, feel smooth and cool. Texture depends on the size of the grains, or tiny pieces, locked inside the rock. **Hardness** — Some rocks scratch easily. Chalk is so soft you can write with it. Granite is so hard it is used to make pavements. Scientists use a hardness scale to compare rocks. **Permeability** — This is whether water can pass through a rock. Sandstone has tiny gaps between its grains, so water soaks through it slowly. Slate has no gaps, so water runs straight off. You can see this in action after rain: puddles form on slate rooftops, but sandy soil drains quickly. **What is soil?** Soil is not just dirt — it is a mixture of several things: tiny broken bits of rock, dead plant and animal material (called humus), water, air, and living creatures like worms and bacteria. Over thousands of years, wind, rain, and ice slowly break big rocks into smaller and smaller pieces. This process is called weathering. Those tiny rock pieces mix with humus to make soil. Different rocks weather into different soils. Sandy soil (from sandstone) drains fast. Clay soil (from clay rock) holds water and feels sticky. **Worked Example — Comparing Two Rocks:** Imagine you pick up two rocks from a riverbank. Rock A is pale yellow, gritty to touch, and water soaks into it. Rock B is dark grey, smooth, and water slides straight off. Rock A is probably sandstone — rough grains, permeable. Rock B is probably slate — smooth, no gaps, impermeable. You have just done what a real geologist does: observe and compare properties to identify a rock.
