Every Person Is Different — and That's Great!

Imagine your class is making a giant mural. Everyone paints one section. If every person used only blue paint, the mural would look very plain. But if everyone chose their own colour, the mural would be amazing and full of life. People are a bit like that mural. We each bring something different to the world.

Diversity means the many different ways people can be. Think about the people around you. Some have curly hair, some have straight hair. Some use a wheelchair, some do not. People come from different countries and speak different languages at home. Some celebrate Diwali, some celebrate Eid, some celebrate Christmas, and some celebrate other events entirely. People can also have different family types — some have two parents, some have one, some are raised by grandparents. All of these differences make up diversity. Inclusion means making sure that everyone is welcomed, valued, and able to join in — no matter how they look, where they are from, or how they live. Inclusion is the action we take to make diversity a good thing for everyone. Sometimes people leave someone out because they seem different. This can feel very hurtful. When we include people, we show them they matter. Research by organisations like UNICEF shows that children who feel included at school are happier, learn better, and make more friends. Here is an important idea: being different does not make someone less. Every person has strengths. A child who is deaf might be brilliant at reading people's expressions. A child who has moved from another country might speak two languages. A child who looks different from others might have a fantastic sense of humour. When we include people, we get to discover these strengths.
