Unlocking the Past: Spanish Preterite Tense

Imagine you had the perfect day yesterday — you played football, ate pizza, and watched your favourite film. Now imagine trying to tell a Spanish friend all about it. How would you switch your verbs from 'I play' to 'I played'? In English we often just add '-ed'. Spanish has its own elegant system for this — and once you crack it, you can talk about anything that already happened. The preterite tense (el pretérito indefinido) is the main Spanish past tense for completed actions — things that happened and are finished. Think of it as a snapshot: one action, done, in the past. Spanish verbs come in three families, based on their infinitive ending: -ar (e.g. hablar — to speak), -er (e.g. comer — to eat), and -ir (e.g. vivir — to live). The -er and -ir endings are identical. The -ar endings use a/e vowels (hablé, hablaste…), while -er/-ir endings use i/ie vowels (comí, comiste…). Accents matter — 'hablo' (I speak, present) vs 'habló' (he/she spoke, past) are two different words. These rules work for regular verbs. Spanish also has irregular preterites (like ser/ir → fui), but mastering the regular pattern first gives you a powerful foundation.
