These colonies had their own local assemblies — elected councils that made local laws. However, the final authority rested with the British parliament and king. **The Causes: Why Did Revolution Break Out?** *Financial pressure after war.* Britain had just fought the Seven Years' War (1756–1763) and was deeply in debt.
